Watauga County Habitat for Humanity Seeking Director of Development

Organization Description
Watauga County Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Watauga County Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with corporate and community partners to build modest and affordable housing. The houses are sold to qualifying families at no profit and with no interest.

Position: Director of Development

Reports to: Executive Director

General Description:
Under the supervision of the Executive Director the Director of Development is responsible for working with the Executive Director and Board of Directors in planning and coordinating all aspects of resource development and marketing for the affiliate. S/He is responsible for developing and implementing a marketing and resource development plan that utilizes strategy to increase the affiliate’s market share, brand recognition and resources including fundraising, grants, major gifts, planned giving, sponsorship acquisition, property, in-kind donations, support for operations, home sponsors, team-building days, ReStore sponsors and cultivating new donors and volunteers.

Responsibilities: The Director of Development plans, manages and implements annual fundraising activities and assists the Executive Director in general administration, financial management, community relations and strategic planning. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

Unrestricted support for home building and operations
• Analyze current programs and fundraising activities, initiate and generate new programs and ideas
• Work with the staff and Board to cultivate and increase the gifts from current donors and the overall number of donors
• Develop and sustain productive relationships with major gift constituencies, including business and corporate sponsors and individual donors
• Develop and implement annual giving programs, including but not limited to Carpenter’s Club, direct mail, matching gifts, monthly giving, and online giving
• Assist with the management and effective use of the Habitat’s database relating to donors, donor recognition and fundraising activity
• Write, update and evaluate the annual fund development plan
• Integrate planned giving program with annual fund donor cultivation and solicitation efforts

Grant management
• Research grant funding opportunities to support annual operating fund and capital giving for home building needs
• Maintain annual calendar of grant activity and deadlines
• Write and submit proposals for funding and prepare reports and other documents related to grant activity

Special events
• Work with the staff, Board and volunteers to help Habitat successfully produce fundraising events
• Work with fundraising committee to sustain and build event success
• Access community groups and businesses engaged in charitable giving opportunities through fundraisers

Public Relations / Marketing
• Prepare/Adapt a comprehensive marketing plan to meet the long-range plan of the affiliate.
• Coordinate public outreach efforts including the development of public outreach materials such as print and electronic newsletters, direct mail, press releases, free and paid advertising, brochures, social media and web site
• Coordinate all media relations and promote Habitat’s message throughout the community
• Develop materials, content and tools for raising funds, including website, newsletter, brochures and campaign materials
• Seek out and schedule opportunities to make informational presentations to corporate, church, civic, and community groups

Additional Responsibilities:
• Work with the Executive Director and the Finance Committee to develop and draft an annual budget for approval by the board
• Work with Volunteer Coordinator to strengthen the volunteer development program, increasing awareness of Habitat in the broader community and growing the overall number of volunteers
• Develop relationships with the local nonprofit and philanthropic community for the purpose of informational exchange and support
• Attend and participate in scheduled Board of Directors meetings, Board and staff retreats and regional HFHI conferences and training

• Desire to work towards Habitat’s mission
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite
• Leadership and team-building skills
• Flexibility and sense of humor
• Fundraising experience, ideally in a non-profit and/or faith-based organization
• Ability to take initiative and make effective recommendations to staff and Board

Competencies and Preferred Skills:
• Bachelor’s degree and three years successful experience in fundraising preferred but enthusiasm and passion for the mission will be considered in lieu of experience
• Must be goal-driven, results-oriented and committed to the organization’s effort to increase its homebuilding capacity
• Must have an understanding of the mission, history, values and goals of our Christian organization and be able to communicate this information to diverse groups of potential donors and volunteers
• The ability to work effectively as a team member with staff and volunteers is essential
• Ability to work with prospective donors of all giving levels with an emphasis on major gift prospects
• Outstanding communication skills; in particular, the ability to make compelling presentations to diverse groups and to prepare well-written proposals and public relations materials
• Exceptional organizational skills and ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects
• Background (experience and/or education) in project and event management
• Experience working with volunteers and/or personally volunteering
• Knowledge of local philanthropic and business community or enthusiasm and willingness to learn

• Full-time exempt position
• Flexible schedule, but position will require some evenings and weekends
• Salary commensurate with experience. Watauga Habitat provides a competitive salary and benefits package for full-time employees
